Software Engineer: Android

Brooklyn, NY, United States
The Android Developer will work with the Mobile team to make the Etsy experience available on Android phones – as part of our larger goal to bring Etsy to everyone, on every device.
Etsy is seeking Android Engineers to join a small, collaborative team that’s responsible for the end-to-end development of our Android smartphone and tablet apps — supporting our long-term vision of bringing Etsy to every mobile device.

About the Team

Etsy’s Mobile team is set on redefining what mobile, person-to-person commerce means. We are a tight-knit, passionate group that embraces hard work, supports creativity, and dreams big. The ideal candidate will bring energy, creativity, and humor to the team, along with deep expertise and a details-driven approach to their work.

About the Job

You’ll be contributing to the teams that bring Etsy’s global marketplace to Android and iOS devices, with more than 9 million downloads around the world. Our apps allow buyers to discover unique and trending handmade and vintage items from across the marketplace, and provide sellers with the opportunity to run their shops, connect with buyers, and manage their workflow from their smartphones or tablets.

Some specific details about the role...

  • Build out new buyer- and seller-oriented features for our well-renowned Android apps.
  • Work as part of a growing team that displays both technical excellence and incredibly friendly personalities.
  • Prototype new ideas and explore new technologies that are at the forefront of mobile technology and commerce.
  • Maintenance and bug fixes are a part of every engineering job. At Etsy, you’ll use and create the best tools around for analysis and troubleshooting, including real-time analytics, run-time configurations, and crash reporting.
  • Assume responsibility for one or more distinct features within our apps, or some aspect of our application stack. You’ll have opportunities to set goals and to execute against them with other members of the team.
  • This role isn’t just about building Android apps. You’ll also contribute to our API and web stacks that are written in PHP. It’s likely that you’ll also cross paths with Scala, Ruby and Python from time to time. There will be people to help you. It will be OK.

About You

You have been working as an Android developer either in a professional role or in at least one significant side project. In other words, you’re familiar with writing Java, you know your way around the Android SDK, and you’ve shipped something to Google’s Play Store—not to mention, you’re proud of it.

We are building mobile apps that are already used by millions of people on their phones and tablets. You are someone who will approach this with a passion for the end-to-end user experience and empathy for our users, even when that means taking some time away from new product development to focus on polishing UI bugs and troubleshooting crash reports.

Strict rules about minimum years of experience are for bureaucrats! But as a general guide, this role is appropriate for candidates who have spent a couple of years working solely in native app development, as well as candidates who have been working successfully in software engineering for a few years and are transitioning their experience to mobile development. Additionally, if you’re just graduating from college but have demonstrated experience with Android we’d also like to talk to you.

What’s Next

We're growing rapidly and are well-funded with a proven business model and established revenue to help us continue growing and serving our community. If you're interested in joining the team at Etsy, please send a cover letter along with your resume, telling us what inspires you about Etsy and why you think you are perfect for the team (applications without a cover letter will not be considered). If you write a blog, or practice another craft besides leading the development of  beautiful, functional websites and apps, that means something to us, and we would love to hear about it!
