Software Engineer-Search and Data Services

Engineering | San Francisco, CA, United States

Why work at Trulia?

Engineering gets respect.
We use the phrase 'we're a tech company that does Real Estate' to emphasize how important engineering is to the company. Engineering is the department that drives our apps, tools, data, and interfaces forward. This attitude comes not only from the Engineers, but from our CEO and other top management. They believe in us.

We have awesome problems to solve.
The housing market provides a fantastic blend of problems. We need creative people to help us combine the data about every address in America with the soft side of helping people find a home that makes them feel safe, happy, and comfortable.

Stability is wonderful.
We're that rare company that holds the culture of its startup roots, while blending in the sanity of a regular work schedule with an emphasis on work/life/family balance. It’s like this because we worked hard to make it this way.

What you’ll work on:

The world of real estate data is huge and spans a multitude of data sources. We're looking for the right engineers to help build and improve core back-end data services, processing pipelines, storage platforms, and search infrastructure that feed our real estate site. Your work will surface daily on millions of pages across the site and provide millions of users with cleaner, more relevant, more local, information.

This position involves designing and building large-scale applications and systems to acquire, process, store, and make discoverable vast quantities of real estate information. You thrive on challenges around performance optimization, parallelization, and scalability that come with the data demands of a high-traffic, constantly growing, public website. You have an interest in cutting-edge and open-source technologies and bring your own toolset and experiences to the mix.

You:
- You have development experience working with data processing at scale, preferably in Java.
- You live to break down and solve complex problems by creating practical, maintainable, and scalable solutions
- You're a great person that willingly collaborates, listens, and cares about your peers.
- Ideally you also have some experience with production systems and know how to keep things humming.

What you'll work with:
Our core data pipeline is rooted in Java and Hadoop, with additional data in Solr/Lucene, Cassandra and Mysql. Special guest appearances by Python, Perl, Bash and friends.

How we work:
The engineering team overall is about a hundred people. The core data team is at the heart of our data driven business. Time is spent working on specific new features in collaboration with one or more of the other engineering teams and some time is spent working on strategic infrastructure shared by all. Organizationally, we're pretty flat, though you'll have a mentor and weekly 1-on-1 meetings, to review code, exchange ideas, and ensure we're doing everything we can for you to thrive in your role.

Other Perks:
- 'Innovation Week' every quarter
- People you're happy to see every day
- Stocked Kitchens and kegerators on every floor
- Great benefits (flexible, uncapped time off, variety of heavily-subsidized health plans, 401k match)
- All IDEs welcome
- Aeron chairs
- Unbeatable SOMA office with Penthouse Roof Deck
- Indoor bike racks
