Salary Range:

$136,000.00 - $176,000.00

What's the role?

We’re looking for a Senior User Experience Researcher who’s passionate about blending data science and human insight to shape how our machine learning systems — powering Search, Recommendations, and Ads — help people discover the things they love.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Product Research Manager. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. What’s this team like at Etsy?

The Search, Recommendations, and Ads ML teams work on systems that influence nearly every buyer and seller experience on Etsy. Together, you’ll explore how customers interact with algorithms — how they search, how they browse, and how they trust what they see — and ensure our models reflect the diversity, creativity, and authenticity of our community.

What does the day-to-day look like?

Design and lead research that blends quantitative analysis with qualitative storytelling to illuminate how buyers and sellers experience Etsy’s machine-learning-powered features (e.g., data-driven segmentation, survey analysis, journey mapping).

Partner with ML engineers and data scientists to identify where human insights can inform model training, evaluation, and optimization.

Study how users interpret algorithmic recommendations, search results, and ad placements — and how those systems can better align with user intent, expectations, and delight.

Combine attitudinal data derived from interviews, usability studies, and surveys with behavioral and analytics data to identify impactful opportunities to improve our ML models.

Develop evaluation frameworks that combine quantitative metrics (relevance, engagement, fairness) with human experience measures (trust, satisfaction).

Communicate insights through engaging storytelling — turning data, quotes, and trends into clear guidance for cross-functional partners.

Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

You’re fluent in both human stories and statistical models — equally comfortable running regressions or facilitating a cross-functional strategy workshop.

You’ve led user research in complex, data-driven environments and have 3+ years of experience influencing product decisions.

You are confident with qualitative and quantitative user research methods like contextual inquiry, usability testing, survey design, and diary studies.

You have experience with database querying (BigQuery / SQL) and are familiar with statistical programming (R, Python) and advanced analytics.

You have experience with AI-powered products (e.g., large language models, conversational AI, generative AI) and a robust understanding of the underlying technology and unique user challenges.

You are familiar with human-in-the-loop workflows, reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), or model interpretability.

You love collaborating across disciplines — translating between the perspectives of machine learning engineers, designers, and product managers.

You’re motivated by making technology more human, transparent, and trustworthy.

Bonus Points

You have experience researching or supporting Search, Recommendation, or Ads systems in large-scale marketplaces.

You hold a Master’s or Ph.D. in Human–Computer Interaction, Data Science, Statistics, Cognitive Science, Sociology, or a related field.

Company Description

Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. We build, power, and evolve the tools and technologies that connect millions of entrepreneurs with millions of buyers around the world. As an Etsy Inc. employee, whether a team member of Etsy or Depop, you will tackle unique, meaningful, and large-scale problems alongside passionate coworkers, all the while making a rewarding impact and Keeping Commerce Human.

Salary Range:

$116,000.00 - $150,000.00

What’s the role?

Etsy's Data Enablement department builds systems and infrastructure and writes data pipelines for collecting, storing, and analyzing huge sets of data in batch and streaming contexts. As a member of the Core Data team, you'll work on the pipelines that transform Etsy’s rich clickstream data sources into core datasets that are integral to thousands of downstream data processing jobs. You’ll help build out the transform layer to integrate low-latency stream processing into traditional batch jobs; you’ll help design new methods and tooling for ensuring the validity and quality of our data; and you’ll write new robust data pipelines in Spark, BigQuery SQL, and Kafka Streams.

We work in Scala, Python, Java, and SQL, and we work with technologies like Spark, Kafka, Airflow, Looker, Dataproc, and BigQuery. Experience with any of these is helpful but not required; above all, we value curiosity, enthusiasm, responsibility and generosity of spirit. We're looking for a flexible engineer who cares about the data that flows through pipelines and the internal customers who will use that data. We care more about being excited to pivot to the appropriate tool for the job than having deep expertise in single systems.

The technical staff at Etsy believes that code is craft, and that the work we do is part of a larger creative culture that includes the hundreds of thousands of inspired artists and designers who make Etsy such a unique marketplace. We believe that small, empowered, self-motivated teams can do big things. We believe in measuring everything, taking advantage of our continuous deployment system to ship code early and often, and keeping up a blameless culture based on trust and a commitment to learning.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Core Data. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

Our team is responsible for the daily delivery of Etsy’s core datasets, powering hundreds of business-critical datasets downstream.

We’re constantly working to improve upon our data services and extract value from existing data sources by providing new and scalable ways to access and transform our clickstream data.

We ensure the health and timely delivery of the ETL pipelines and data models that power our core business analytics datasets and the upstream feature data that feeds all of Etsy's machine learning systems.

We build and maintain internal tools for monitoring and validating high-quality data.

What does the day-to-day look like?

You will work with your team to improve our pipeline that helps us understand how buyers arrived at Etsy and their experience on the site and app.

You will help build and maintain streaming datasets that power our search, ads, and recommendation systems.

You will support evolving our bot filtering rules to ensure the quality of our data.

You will partner with product engineering teams to ensure that data collected is of high quality and consistent across all of our platforms.

You will help maintain and update core datasets that are reusable and cover the needs of our analytics, product, and engineering partners.

Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

You have familiarity with a few of the following: integrating low-latency and batch processing, working with event-based data systems, stream processing systems like Kafka Streams, Spark, or Dataflow, or writing SQL queries for data exploration and analysis.

You understand that being an effective software engineer is about communicating with people as much as it is about writing code.

You are generous with your time and experience, and can mentor and learn from other engineers.

You can tackle unconstrained problems and know when to seek help.

You are flexible with languages and tools and are willing to learn whatever is necessary to get the job done.

Engineering Manager: Mobile Apps | Etsy, Inc. | Brooklyn, NY, United States

Engineering Manager: Mobile Apps | Etsy, Inc. | Brooklyn, NY, United States

Engineering Manager: Mobile Apps

Brooklyn, NY, United States
The Engineering Manager: Mobile Apps will lead a team in the development and implementation of large-scale mobile apps.
Etsy is seeking an Engineering Manager: Mobile Apps to join our Mobile Apps team. As Etsy's Mobile team grows, we are looking for a technical manager to guide our native apps team—providing vision and direction for planning, building, and maintaining large-scale mobile apps across multiple native platforms.

About the Team

The Mobile Apps team plays a key role in extending the Etsy marketplace to new platforms and markets—connecting buyers and sellers from anywhere in the world, on any device. This is a tight-knit, passionate group, set on enhancing the relationship between buyers and sellers  via mobile devices. Working alongside Etsy's quickly moving web team, we are adopting a fast-release process, running A/B tests and prototypes, and seeking ways to increase contributions from our web team to our native app platforms.

About the Job

Engineering managers at Etsy play a small part in the hands-on process of building software, but a very large part in building a team and orchestrating the work of individual members. You'll lead the day-to-day work of the Mobile Apps team, playing multiple roles.

This is a management-track position. The primary focus of this role is building a team and facilitating their ability to ship. Contributing production-facing code is extremely low on the responsibility list. (If you want to spend your day writing code, we have other awesome opportunities for that!)

Responsibilities:
  • Manager for project, sprint, and milestone planning
  • Creator of focus and inspiration
  • Builder of careers and individual development
  • Maintainer of happiness
  • Chief Un-blocker
  • Getter of answers
  • Facilitator of decisions
  • Social coordinator (from time to time)
About You

You have a vision for what mobile at Etsy can be and how mobile can be used to grow Etsy’s buyer and seller audiences internationally.

You will be successful in this role if you:
  • Have experience working with teams building products for iOS or Android.
  • Understand the limits of individuals and recognize the advantages of building cohesive teams.
  • Have a keen awareness of how all of the pieces fit together—at both the architectural level in how high-quality software is built and the product level where the end result has to make sense.
  • Have prior experience building and running consumer-facing web sites or apps.
