Staff Software Engineer - Data Platform

Bengaluru, India

P-1348

At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems, from security threat detection to cancer drug development. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform, so our customers can focus on the high value challenges that are central to their own missions. Our engineering teams build technical products that fulfill real, important needs in the world. We always push the boundaries of data and AI technology, while simultaneously operating with the resilience, security and scale that is important to making customers successful on our platform.

We develop and operate one of the largest scale software platforms. The fleet consists of millions of virtual machines, generating terabytes of logs and processing exabytes of data per day. At our scale, we observe cloud hardware, network, and operating system faults, and our software must gracefully shield our customers from any of the above.

As a Staff Software Engineer working on the Data Platform team you will help build the Data Intelligence Platform for Databricks that will allow us to automate decision-making across the entire company. You will achieve this in collaboration with Databricks Product Teams, Data Science, Applied AI and many more. You will develop a variety of tools spanning logging, orchestration, data transformation, metric store, governance platforms, data consumption layers etc. You will do this using the latest, bleeding-edge Databricks product and other tools in the data ecosystem - the team also functions as a large, production, in-house customer that dog foods Databricks and guides the future direction of the product.

The impact you will have:

Design and run the Databricks metrics store that enables all business units and engineering teams to bring their detailed metrics into a common platform for sharing and aggregation, with high quality, introspection ability and query performance.

Design and run the cross-company Data Intelligence Platform, which contains every business and product metric used to run Databricks. You’ll play a key role in developing the right balance of data protections and ease of shareability for the Data Intelligence Platform as we transition to a public company.

Develop tooling and infrastructure to efficiently manage and run Databricks on Databricks at scale, across multiple clouds, geographies and deployment types. This includes CI/CD processes, test frameworks for pipelines and data quality, and infrastructure-as-code tooling.

Design the base ETL framework used by all pipelines developed at the company.

Partner with our engineering teams to provide leadership in developing the long-term vision and requirements for the Databricks product.

Build reliable data pipelines and solve data problems using Databricks, our partner’s products and other OSS tools. Provide early feedback on the design and operations of these products.

Establish conventions and create new APIs for telemetry, debug, feature and audit event log data, and evolve them as the product and underlying services change.

Represent Databricks at academic and industrial conferences & events.

What we look for:

12+ years of industry experience

6+ years of experience providing technical leadership on large projects similar to the ones described above - ETL frameworks, metrics stores, infrastructure management, data security.

Experience building, shipping and operating reliable multi-geo data pipelines at scale.

Experience working with and operating workflow or orchestration frameworks, including open source tools like Airflow and DBT or commercial enterprise tools.

Experience with large-scale messaging systems like Kafka or RabbitMQ or commercial systems.

Excellent cross-functional and communication skills, consensus builder.

Staff Software Engineer - Fullstack | Databricks | Vancouver, Canada

Staff Software Engineer - Fullstack | Databricks | Vancouver, Canada

Staff Software Engineer - Fullstack

Vancouver, Canada

Databricks is on a mission to simplify and democratize data and AI — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business. Founded by engineers — and customer obsessed — we leap at every opportunity to solve technical challenges, from designing next-gen UI/UX for interfacing with data to scaling our services and infrastructure across millions of virtual machines. And we're only getting started.

As a Fullstack software engineer, you will work with your team and product management to make insights from data simple. We are looking for engineers that are customer obsessed, who can take on the full scope of the product and user experience beyond the technical implementation. You'll set the foundation for how we build robust, scalable and delightful products.

Vancouver will be the newest R&D center for Databricks, expanding our presence in the Pacific Northwest. We are actively hiring world-class engineers to join us on our mission to democratize data + AI.

We envision the Vancouver site becoming a key driver of product innovation at Databricks. To start, we’re bringing a few strategic areas to the Vancouver site and we have several open roles across the teams below, including:

Log Analytics - Our customers increasingly use Databricks to analyze petabyte-scale logs in real time. This creates new challenges across the entire data processing pipeline, including ingestion, indexing, processing, and the user experience itself.

AI/BI - AI/BI is redefining Business Intelligence for the AI age. We launched this product last summer and have already seen tremendous adoption (98.7% of our data warehousing customers are already using AI/BI!). From rich dashboarding and advanced visualizations to powerful talk-to-your-data solutions, the products we are building involve exciting technical challenges across the entire stack.

Unity Catalog Business Semantics - Context is everything for AI. For enterprise data, that context needs to be governed and managed, which is what Unity Catalog Business Semantics offers. We recently launched our first Semantics modelling capability, Unity Catalog Metrics, this past Data + AI Summit but we have a lot more in store. Engineers on this team work at the intersection of large scale distributed systems, data modeling, governance, and AI enablement.

Databricks Apps - Databricks Apps is one of the fastest growing products at Databricks, used by more than 2,500 customers who have created more than 20,000 apps — and it was only GA’ed this past June. The Apps team is one of the few teams that are exposed to low-level platform components (k8s, networking), owns fundamental tech (apps runtime and proxy), and is heavily investing in app builder AI agents.

What we look for:

10+ years of experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Passion for user experience and design and a deep understanding of front-end architecture.

Comfortable working towards a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables.

Motivated by delivering customer value.

Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, or VueJs/Ember).

10+ years of experience with server-side web technologies (eg: Node.js, Java, Python, Scala, C#, C++,Go).

Good knowledge of SQL.

Experience with cloud technologies, e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, or Kubernetes.

Experience developing large-scale distributed systems.

Staff Software Engineer, Model Serving

San Francisco, California

At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business.

Databricks’ Model Serving product provides enterprises with a unified, scalable, and governed platform to deploy and manage AI/ML models — from traditional ML to fine-tuned and proprietary large language models. It offers real-time, low-latency inference, governance, monitoring, and lineage. As AI adoption accelerates, Model Serving is a core pillar of the Databricks platform, enabling customers to operationalize models at scale with strong SLAs and cost efficiency.

As a Staff Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in shaping both the product experience and the foundational infrastructure of Model Serving. You will design and build systems that enable high-throughput, low-latency inference across CPU and GPU workloads, influence architectural direction, and collaborate closely across platform, product, infrastructure, and research teams to deliver a world-class serving platform.

Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and system design as applied to large-scale, low-latency serving systems.

Proven ability to deliver technically complex, high-impact initiatives that create measurable customer or business value.

Experience leading architecture for large-scale, performance-sensitive CPU/GPU inference systems.

Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams in fast-moving environments.

Strategic and product-oriented mindset with the ability to align technical execution with long-term vision.

Passion for mentoring, growing engineers, and fostering technical excellence.

Staff Software Engineer, Foundational Model Serving | Databricks | San Francisco, California

Staff Software Engineer, Foundational Model Serving

San Francisco, California

At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business.

Foundation Model Serving is the API Product for hosting and serving frontier AI model inference for open source models like Llama, Qwen, and GPT OSS as well as proprietary models like Claude and OpenAI GPT. For this role, no prior ML or AI experience is necessary. We’re looking for engineers who have owned high scale operational sensitive systems like customer facing APIs, Edge Gateways, ML Inference, or similar services and have an interest in getting deep building LLM APIs and runtimes at scale.

As a Staff Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in shaping both the product experience and core infrastructure. You will design and build systems that enable high-throughput, low-latency inference on GPU workloads with frontier models, influence architectural direction, and collaborate closely across platform, product, infrastructure, and research teams to deliver a world-class foundation model API product.

The impact you will have:

Design and implement core systems and APIs that power Databricks Foundation Model Serving, ensuring scalability, reliability, and operational excellence.

Partner with product and engineering leadership to define the technical roadmap and long-term architecture for serving workloads.

Drive architectural decisions and trade-offs to optimize performance, throughput, autoscaling, and operational efficiency for GPU serving workloads.

Contribute directly to key components across the serving infrastructure — from working in systems like vLLM and SGLang to creating token based rate limiters and optimizers — ensuring smooth and efficient operations at scale.

Collaborate cross-functionally with product, platform, and research teams to translate customer needs into reliable and performant systems.

Establish best practices for code quality, testing, and operational readiness, and mentor other engineers through design reviews and technical guidance.

Represent the team in cross-organizational technical discussions and influence Databricks’ broader AI platform strategy.

What we look for:

10+ years of experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems.

Experience leading high-scale operationally sensitive backend systems.

A track record of up-leveling teams engineering excellence.

Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and system design as applied to large-scale, low-latency serving systems.

Proven ability to deliver technically complex, high-impact initiatives that create measurable customer or business value.

Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams in fast-moving environments.

Strategic and product-oriented mindset with the ability to align technical execution with long-term vision.

Passion for mentoring, growing engineers, and fostering technical excellence.

At Databricks, we are obsessed with enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems, from security threat detection to cancer drug development. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform, so our customers can focus on the high value challenges that are central to their own missions.

Founded in 2013 by the original creators of Apache Spark™, Databricks has grown from a tiny corner office in Berkeley, California to a global organization with over 1000 employees. Thousands of organizations, from small to Fortune 100, trust Databricks with their mission-critical workloads, making us one of the fastest growing SaaS companies in the world.

Our engineering teams build highly technical products that fulfill real, important needs in the world. We constantly push the boundaries of data and AI technology, while simultaneously operating with the resilience, security and scale that is critical to making customers successful on our platform.

We develop and operate one of the largest scale software platforms. The fleet consists of millions of virtual machines, generating terabytes of logs and processing exabytes of data per day. At our scale, we regularly observe cloud hardware, network, and operating system faults, and our software must gracefully shield our customers from any of the above.

Modern data analysis employs sophisticated methods such as machine learning that go well beyond the roll-up and drill-down capabilities of traditional SQL query engines. As a software engineer on the Runtime team at Databricks, you will be building the next generation distributed data storage and processing systems that can outperform specialized SQL query engines in relational query performance, yet provide the expressiveness and programming abstractions to support diverse workloads ranging from ETL to data science.

Below are some example projects:

Apache Spark™: Develop the de facto open source standard framework for big data.

Data Plane Storage: Deliver reliable and high performance services and client libraries for storing and accessing humongous amount of data on cloud storage backends, e.g., AWS S3, Azure Blob Store.

Delta Lake: A storage management system that combines the scale and cost-efficiency of data lakes, the performance and reliability of a data warehouse, and the low latency of streaming. Its higher level abstractions and guarantees, including ACID transactions and time travel, drastically simplify the complexity of real-world data engineering architecture.

Delta Pipelines: It's difficult to manage even a single data engineering pipeline. The goal of the Delta Pipelines project is to make it simple and possible to orchestrate and operate tens of thousands of data pipelines. It provides a higher level abstraction for expressing data pipelines and enables customers to deploy, test & upgrade pipelines and eliminate operational burdens for managing and building high quality data pipelines.

Performance Engineering: Build the next generation query optimizer and execution engine that's fast, tuning free, scalable, and robust.

What we look for:

BS in Computer Science, related technical field or equivalent practical experience.

Optional: MS or PhD in databases, distributed systems.

Comfortable working towards a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables.

Driven by delivering customer value and impact.

8+ years of production level experience in either Java, Scala or C++.

Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures and their real-world use cases.

Experience with distributed systems, databases, and big data systems (Apache Spark™, Hadoop).
