About Pinterest:

Millions of people around the world come to our platform to find creative ideas, dream about new possibilities and plan for memories that will last a lifetime. At Pinterest, we’re on a mission to bring everyone the inspiration to create a life they love, and that starts with the people behind the product.

Discover a career where you ignite innovation for millions, transform passion into growth opportunities, celebrate each other’s unique experiences and embrace the flexibility to do your best work. Creating a career you love? It’s Possible.

Within Pinterest, the Pinterest Labs organization focuses on applied ML research and development. Labs focuses on a broad variety of AI/ML initiatives, such as core computer vision, multimodal representation learning, heterogeneous graph neural networks, generative modeling, recommender systems, etc. This is the group that develops foundation ML models that fully leverage the tens of billions of Pins and the associated knowledge graph to improve the core product.

We are currently hiring for the visual modeling team in Labs, which focuses on developing Pinterest Canvas. Canvas is a foundation text-to-image model developed internally for helping various visualization, inpainting, and outpainting products. In this role, you’ll get to work with Pinterest’s rich visual-text dataset to build large-scale generative models which are continuously being shipped to production to power visualization features. The core Canvas pod is a small group (~6 engineers along with a product prototyping team) inside of Labs, allowing for deep collaboration. For example, engineers working on the Canvas project also participate in the development of our core multimodal text & image embeddings, as these are in turn used to condition the model in unique ways.

What you’ll do:

Prototype new model architectures for Pinterest Canvas, our internal text-to-image generative model. We’re looking for hands-on experience working with diffusion text-to-image models and independent model implementation skills.

Read research papers, participate in group discussions, and help brainstorm our overall visual generative strategy at the company.

Help with collection of relevant visual training data for Pinterest Canvas, particularly to conduct RLHF, targeted fine-tuning, etc.

Publish and publicize your work via conferences, paper submissions, blog posts, etc.

Mentor more junior researchers or research interns within the Pinterest Labs organization.

What we’re looking for:

Research engineers and scientists who have experience working with generative computer vision models, preferably various forms of diffusion models.

5+ years of industry computer vision experience.

M.S. or PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related areas.

Publications at top ML conferences.

In-Office Requirement Statement:

We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection.

This role will need to be in the office for in-person collaboration 1-2 times/quarter and therefore can be situated anywhere in the country.

7+ years of experience analyzing data in a fast-paced, data-driven environment with proven ability to apply scientific methods to solve real-world problems on web-scale data

Strong interest and experience in recommendation systems and causal inference

Description

About Pinterest:

Millions of people around the world come to our platform to find creative ideas, dream about new possibilities and plan for memories that will last a lifetime. Discover a career where you ignite innovation for millions, transform passion into growth opportunities, celebrate each other’s unique experiences and embrace the flexibility to do your best work. Creating a career you love? It’s Possible.

Pinterest helps more than half a billion users discover new ideas to help design their lives. Our users come to Pinterest to explore ideas and run more than 6 billion search queries every month. Many of these queries represent exploratory search intent and are broad, which means that the search system should be able to deeply understand this intent, and then help people explore content, personalize results, harness visual signals effectively, and show the most engaging content up front. In addition, the team also owns query refinements and modules that help Pinners narrow their search intent from broad exploratory queries, to help them narrow their results down. All of this means that Pinterest search presents a unique challenge quite unlike other search systems and the opportunity to innovate on a product that only Pinterest can build.

The Closeup Relevance team owns Closeup recommendations (a.k.a. related pins), which help pinners explore topics they are interested in and get continuous inspirations. This is the largest recommendation surface on Pinterest and we work with some of the largest datasets in the world, creating unique experiences for hundreds of millions of pinners. Our system serves billions of daily impressions and is critical for company business. We are looking for a highly motivated Staff ML engineer to work as a cross-team technical leader.

What you will do:

You will be working in a cross-team environment, with a lot of talented ML engineers. You will work with state-of-the-art recommendation tech stack and have the opportunity to lead innovation and/or redesign of the full recommendation funnel.

You will be a leader in ML innovations whose impact is felt across the organization

Work closely with other engineering teams in Pinterest to bring superior Closeup experience to our users, such as ATG, ML Platform, Closeup Product, Content Quality and Core Infrastructure

Develop an inspiring technical vision, and ambitious but grounded strategy for the team. Deliver outstanding results

Provide visibility for senior leadership into the team’s global impact.

Partner with stakeholders to expand impact across the company, including product management and data scientists.

Mentor and grow senior engineers on the team

Build a culture of innovations and excellence

What we are looking for:

7+ years of professional experience in Machine Learning

5+ years of proposing and delivering innovations from original research or adopting cutting edge ML research

3+ years of experience in leading large-scale and mature ML recommendation systems teams, in an end-to-end fashion.

Thrives in ambiguity, skilled in defining and exploring open ended problems

Experience in setting and delivering technical directions at both team and organizational level

Expertise in machine learning modeling and infrastructure

Adept in statistics, backend, batch and realtime processing systems

Ability to drive the team roadmap end to end

A knack for product and impact on users of a consumer product.

Pinterest is the world’s leading visual search and discovery platform, serving over 500 million monthly active users globally on their journey from inspiration to action. At Pinterest, Shopping is a strategic initiative that aims to help Pinners take action by surfacing the most relevant content, at the right time, in the best user-friendly way. We do this through a combination of innovative product interfaces, and sophisticated recommendation systems.

We are looking for a Staff Data Scientist with experience in machine learning and causal inference to help advance Shopping at Pinterest. In your role you will develop methods and models to explain why certain content is being promoted (or not) for a Pinner. You will work in a highly collaborative and cross-functional environment, and be responsible for partnering with Product Managers and Machine Learning Engineers. You are expected to develop a deep understanding of our recommendation system, and generate insights and robust methodologies to answer the “why”. The results of your work will influence our development teams, and drive product innovation.

What you’ll do:

Ensure that our recommendation systems produce trustworthy, high-quality outputs to maximize our Pinner’s shopping experience.

Develop robust frameworks, combining online and offline methods, to comprehensively understand the outputs of our recommendations.

Bring scientific rigor and statistical methods to the challenges of product creation, development and improvement with an appreciation for the behaviors of our Pinners.

Work cross-functionally to build relationships, proactively communicate key insights, and collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and researchers to help build the next experiences on Pinterest.

Relentlessly focus on impact, whether through influencing product strategy, advancing our north star metrics, or improving a critical process.

Mentor and up-level junior data scientists on the team.

What we’re looking for:

7+ years of experience analyzing data in a fast-paced, data-driven environment with proven ability to apply scientific methods to solve real-world problems on web-scale data.

Strong interest and experience in recommendation systems and causal inference.

Strong quantitative programming (Python/R) and data manipulation skills (SQL/Spark).

Ability to work independently and drive your own projects.

Excellent written and communication skills, and able to explain learnings to both technical and non-technical partners.

A team player eager to partner with cross-functional partners to quickly turn insights into actions.

Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
