Discover a career where you ignite innovation for millions, transform passion into growth opportunities, celebrate each other’s unique experiences and embrace the flexibility to do your best work. Creating a career you love? It’s Possible.

Pinterest helps more than half a billion users discover new ideas to help design their lives. Our users come to Pinterest to explore ideas and run more than 6 billion search queries every month. Many of these queries represent exploratory search intent and are broad, which means that the search system should be able to deeply understand this intent, and then help people explore content, personalize results, harness visual signals effectively, and show the most engaging content up front. In addition, the team also owns query refinements and modules that help Pinners narrow their search intent from broad exploratory queries, to help them narrow their results down. All of this means that Pinterest search presents a unique challenge quite unlike other search systems and the opportunity to innovate on a product that only Pinterest can build.

The Closeup Relevance team owns Closeup recommendations (a.k.a. related pins), which help pinners explore topics they are interested in and get continuous inspirations. This is the largest recommendation surface on Pinterest and we work with some of the largest datasets in the world, creating unique experiences for hundreds of millions of pinners. Our system serves billions of daily impressions and is critical for company business. We are looking for a highly motivated Staff ML engineer to work as a cross-team technical leader.

You will be working in a cross-team environment, with a lot of talented ML engineers. You will work with state-of-the-art recommendation tech stack and have the opportunity to lead innovation and/or redesign of the full recommendation funnel.

You will be a leader in ML innovations whose impact is felt across the organization

Work closely with other engineering teams in Pinterest to bring superior Closeup experience to our users, such as ATG, ML Platform, Closeup Product, Content Quality and Core Infrastructure

Provide visibility for senior leadership into the team’s global impact.

Partner with stakeholders to expand impact across the company, including product management and data scientists.

Mentor and grow senior engineers on the team

Build a culture of innovations and excellence

What we are looking for:

7+ years of professional experience in Machine Learning

5+ years of proposing and delivering innovations from original research or adopting cutting edge ML research

3+ years of experience in leading large-scale and mature ML recommendation systems teams, in an end-to-end fashion.

Thrives in ambiguity, skilled in defining and exploring open ended problems

Experience in setting and delivering technical directions at both team and organizational level

Expertise in machine learning modeling and infrastructure

Adept in statistics, backend, batch and realtime processing systems

Ability to drive the team roadmap end to end

A knack for product and impact on users of a consumer product.

Collaborate with Sales, Marketing Science, and Partnerships to position our methods with advertisers and measurement partners.

Engage with Legal/Privacy to ensure compliance and responsible AI practices across data usage and modeling.

Team building and talent development

Hire, lead, and mentor a diverse team of DS managers and senior ICs; foster a culture of scientific rigor, reproducibility, and impact.

Set standards for code quality, experimentation hygiene, documentation, and peer review across the DS org.

Influence and external representation

Represent Pinterest science in customer briefings, industry forums, and with third-party measurement partners and clean-room providers.

Contribute to publications, whitepapers, and internal tech talks that raise the scientific bar.

What we’re looking for:

Leadership and experience

10+ years of experience in data science, statistics, or applied ML, with substantial time in ads measurement, attribution, or experimentation at scale.

5+ years leading DS teams, including managing managers and senior ICs; proven track record of building high-performing, inclusive teams.

Demonstrated success driving cross-functional impact with Product, Engineering, Sales, and Legal/Privacy.

Exceptional communication skills—able to explain complex methods to executives and customers and to translate business needs into scientific work.

Technical and methodological depth

Strong foundation in causal inference and experimentation (A/B testing, geo experiments, quasi-experimental designs, variance reduction).

Hands-on experience with attribution and calibration (rule-based and data-driven MTA, counterfactual estimation, aggregation and identity challenges).

Familiarity with MMM and triangulation approaches that reconcile MMM, MTA, and lift tests.

Proficiency in Python or R; strong SQL; comfort reviewing production code and collaborating with platform/ML engineers.

Experience with privacy-centric measurement: clean rooms, aggregation frameworks, differential privacy, on-device/edge signals, and privacy regulations.

Product mindset

Evidence of turning science into durable, scalable products with clear customer value.

Fluency in metric design, north-star definitions, and guardrails that align with advertiser outcomes.

Experience with ad platforms, retail media, or e-commerce measurement.

Knowledge of identity resolution, SKAN/ATT, and browser privacy changes.

Publications or talks in causal inference, experimentation, or ads measurement.

Advanced degree in Statistics, Econometrics, CS, or related quantitative field.

In-Office Requirement Statement:

We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection.

Director of Data Science, Ads Delivery & Performance

Seattle / Remote Engineering Regular

Description

About Pinterest:

Millions of people around the world come to our platform to find creative ideas, dream about new possibilities and plan for memories that will last a lifetime. At Pinterest, we’re on a mission to bring everyone the inspiration to create a life they love, and that starts with the people behind the product.

Discover a career where you ignite innovation for millions, transform passion into growth opportunities, celebrate each other’s unique experiences and embrace the flexibility to do your best work. Creating a career you love? It’s Possible.

Pinterest Ads Delivery & Performance is redefining how digital ads are delivered - challenging 20 years of assumptions to both protect the Pinner experience and grow durable revenue. We support all ad surfaces across Pinterest - Home Feed, Search, Related Pins, Shopping surfaces, Idea Streams, and beyond - each with unique marketplace and product dynamics. You’ll lead a high‑impact data science organization that partners deeply with Product, Engineering, Research, and other cross functional partners to build the next generation of advertising products and systems.

About the role We’re looking for a Director who is a leader of leaders and a systems thinker. You will set the strategy for ads delivery and quality, establish the measurement and decision frameworks, and scale a best‑in‑class team of data scientists. A core mandate for this role is to identify, instrument, and operationalize the input metrics that most directly drive ads delivery, quality, and performance - ensuring we are optimizing the levers that move outcomes, not just reporting on lagging KPIs.

What you’ll do:

Set strategy and outcomes

Define the multi‑year vision and roadmap for Ads Delivery & Performance across all Pinterest surfaces, aligning to company and Ads org priorities.

Establish clear north-star outcomes (e.g., long‑term revenue quality, retained advertiser value, Pinner experience) and the right cascade of input metrics and guardrails that drive them.

Make input metrics a first‑class operating system

Identify, define, and instrument the input metrics that most influence delivery and performance, such as: supply health and coverage, eligibility and match rate, win rate, fill rate, pacing and spend smoothness, auction/bid competitiveness, latency/SLA adherence, ranking/model freshness and coverage, feature quality, CTR/CVR leading indicators, frequency and ad load distribution, quality/relevance signals, and policy/trust frictions.

Build metric specs, ownership, alerting, and weekly business reviews so that teams operate to inputs (and understand their elasticities to outcomes like RPM, ROAS, advertiser retention, and Pinner satisfaction).

Lead an organization of leaders

Hire, develop, and inspire a diverse, high‑performance organization of data science managers and senior ICs; set crisp role definitions, growth paths, and succession planning.

Establish rigorous standards for experimentation, causal inference, and production analytics; ensure consistently trustworthy, decision‑grade outputs.

Partner to ship impact

Work hand‑in‑hand with Product and Engineering on marketplace, ranking, pacing, and quality systems (e.g., auction design, supply/demand balancing, relevance, cold‑start, ads load/frequency, shopping ads delivery).

Translate ambiguous business questions into structured analyses and roadmaps; ensure the org moves from insight to shipped change with measurable impact.

Elevate measurement and decision quality

Own the measurement strategy for ads quality and delivery: counterfactual measurement, lift and incrementality, experiment design, long‑term value, and guardrail monitoring for Pinner experience.

Improve our decision frameworks, define minimum statistical standards, and drive consistency in A/B testing, quasi‑experiments, and observational methods when experiments are impractical.

Communicate and align

Present complex analytical findings to executives and cross‑functional partners with clarity; drive alignment on trade‑offs across revenue, advertiser value, and Pinner experience.

Create transparent operating cadences (QBRs/MBRs, input metric reviews, launch reviews) that keep teams focused on the levers that matter.

What we’re looking for:

MS or PhD in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Statistics, Math, Engineering, Economics or related) or equivalent practical experience.

10+ years in Data Science, Algorithmic Engineering, or Machine Learning, with significant impact in digital advertising or large‑scale marketplaces.

5+ years directly managing data science organizations, including managing managers and scaling multi‑team groups in a technology company.

Deep experience with:

Statistical analysis and causal inference, experiment design, and measurement for complex marketplaces.

Production analytics and large‑scale data tooling (e.g., Python/R, SQL; Spark/Hive or similar).

Applied ML or relevance/ranking systems; familiarity with auction dynamics, pacing, bidding, and quality/relevance modeling.

Proven track record of establishing and operating through input metrics tied to business outcomes.

Excellent written and verbal communication; adept at influencing senior cross‑functional partners and executives.

In-Office Requirement Statement:

We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection.

This role will need to be in the office for in-person collaboration 1-2 times/quarter and therefore can be situated anywhere in the country.
