We are looking for a Staff Data Scientist for our Engagement Ecosystem. You will shape the future of people-facing and business-facing products we build at Pinterest. Your expertise in quantitative modeling, experimentation and algorithms will be utilized to solve some of the most complex engineering challenges at the company. You will collaborate on a wide array of product and business problems with a diverse set of cross-functional partners across Product, Engineering, Design, Research, Product Analytics, Data Engineering and others. The results of your work will influence and uplevel our product development teams while introducing greater scientific rigor into the real world products serving hundreds of millions of pinners, creators, advertisers and merchants around the world.


What you’ll do


Develop a deep, nuanced understanding of the Pinterest engagement ecosystem and key product surfaces, quantifying ecosystem-level opportunities and risks.

Lead projects on:

Tradeoffs between organic engagement and advertising.

Deep dives on how engagement metrics impact monetization and retention.

Understanding and predicting the value of core behaviors (e.g., saving, repinning, board creation) as they relate to downstream business outcomes.

Designing and evaluating interventions that sustainably boost enterprise metrics across product boundaries.

Design and productionize robust, scalable ML and evaluation frameworks—spanning forecasting, recommendation, and causal inference.

Advocate for best-in-class experimentation, instrumentation, and metric design; bridge the gap between short-term proxy metrics and long-term business impact.

Collaborate across disciplines—Product, Engineering, Research, Business, and Design—translating complex data questions into actionable business insights.

Mentor and guide junior and senior scientists, fostering intellectual curiosity and driving technical excellence.

What we’re looking for


10+ years of hands-on experience in web-scale data environments, with a track record of solving hard, ambiguous problems in product, engagement, or ecosystem analytics.

Deep expertise in: Machine Learning (recommendation, ranking, prediction, experimentation), Statistical Modeling & Causal Inference (observational and experimental data), Product analytics/strategy (beyond dashboards: root cause, goaling, design collaboration), Programming in Python/R and advanced SQL/Spark.

Strong product intuition—ability to scope, question, and design the right solutions for ill-defined, high-impact business problems.

Scientific rigor and healthy skepticism: You challenge assumptions, find flaws, and drive towards robust, reproducible outcomes.

Exceptional communication: You make the complex simple, and can influence both technical and non-technical audiences.

Track record mentoring and growing data talent at the staff/senior IC level.

What you’ll do


Be the technical lead for the forecasting team. Own the strategy and implementation of forecasting models of key company metrics (e.g., monthly active users), delivering accurate, interpretable forecasts at scale.

Lead the full modeling lifecycle end to end: problem framing, feature engineering, model development and prototyping, experimentation and backtesting, deployment, monitoring/drift detection, and explainability.

Set the forecasting technical vision. Define model architectures and standards, and partner with Engineering to shape the forecasting platform for efficient training/inference today and the scalability needed for the next generation of models.

Translate forecasts into decisions. Present outputs, scenario analyses, and recommendation frameworks to senior leadership with clarity and brevity. This is a high‑visibility role with regular VP-level exposure.

Drive broader time‑series impact beyond point forecasts—e.g., anomaly detection, automated root‑cause analysis, campaign/channel attribution, and early‑warning signals for business health.

Embed forecasting into the business. Partner with BizOps/Finance and product teams to integrate forecasts and insights into operational rhythms, executive decision-making, and strategic planning.

Lead and mentor. Guide the work of at least two data scientists, raising the bar on technical quality, execution, and impact through candid, continuous feedback and coaching.




What we’re looking for


8+ years of combined post-graduate academic and industry experience building and shipping production time‑series/forecasting models with web‑scale data.

A track record of delivering adjustable, well‑calibrated, and explainable forecasting systems that informing decision-making.

Strong background in time‑series modeling and applied statistics/econometrics; advanced degree (MS or PhD) preferred.

Expertise in at least one scripting language (ideally Python).

Strong SQL skills (Hive/Presto/Spark SQL) and experience building reliable data pipelines/workflows (e.g., Airflow).

Business acumen and ownership mindset—able to simplify complex problems, connect model outputs to business levers, and prioritize for impact.

Monitor key trends in ads performance to identify and scale platform-level improvement opportunities and/or flag and mitigate risks of reduction.

Equip the business with data-backed recommendations that deliver the strongest performance outcomes, tailored to key advertiser segments, defined by dimensions including marketing objective, campaign type or measurement source of truth, etc.

Creating and tracking metrics around advertiser value.

Identify the right framework to quantify the value Pinterest provides to advertisers, and drive XFN alignment on implement and monitor those metrics as north stars of success.

Improve decision velocity and quality using data scientist tool kit: experimentation, causal inference techniques, etc. Design measurement strategy, advise on experimentation best practices, identifying flaws in experiment practices and results; building tools for experiment analysis etc.

Leadership: Lead and mentor the scope of work for data scientists in the same area, demonstrating high-quality output of both yourself and others for whom you are responsible. Provide continuous and candid feedback, recognizing individual strengths and contributions and flagging opportunities to improve performance.

What we’re looking for:


MS or PhD in a quantitative field or equivalent experience

8+ years of experience applying data science to solve real-world problems on web-scale data

Domain expertise about ads platforms and products, particularly around measurement and performance

Strong fundamentals in statistics, particularly experimentation and causal inference

Proficiency in common data science coding languages such as SQL and Python.

Proven track record of driving data science projects and/or initiatives in a cross-functional team including both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Improve and customize the internals of open source Flink to meet our challenges at scale and actively participate in open source community

Build and scale stream processing frameworks and infrastructure to process millions of messages per second with terabytes of state

Work with internal customers on critical business use cases that rely on low latency stream processing

Provide thought leadership to the entire company on how real-time data should be processed and stored more reliably, quickly and efficiently at scale

Contribute to the team’s technical vision and long-term roadmap

What we’re looking for:


8+years of industry experience with a proven track record of technical excellence

5+ years of experience of building and support large scalable big data infrastructure/platform

4+ years of experiences in contributing to open-source Flink or streaming technologies

Deep knowledge of big data technologies (e.g.Flink, Spark, Hadoop, Parquet/ORC, Flink)

Experience in leading cross-team engineering efforts

Proficiency in one or more programming languages (Java, Scala, Python)

Experiences in Kubernetes and AWS technologies

BS+ degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science OR equivalent experience

What we're looking for:

The Core Retrieval Infrastructure team is responsible for building and maintaining the large-scale, high-performance retrieval (search) platforms that power recommendations on Pinterest. These platforms offer several retrieval paradigms (token, embedding, hybrid (token + embedding), graph), and support all product surfaces on Pinterest including Homefeed, Search, Closeup, and Shopping.


What you’ll do:


Shape the technical strategy for retrieval platforms at Pinterest and guide the team to implement industry-leading advancements and address emerging product needs within Pinterest

Design and build large-scale, high-performance, reliable retrieval platforms, which index and serve 1B+ documents to 100M+ Pinners

Drive cross-team collaborations to innovate on the frontier of search and recommendations

Mentor senior engineers on the team and support them in honing their technical and leadership skills

What we’re looking for:


10+ years of relevant industry experience (4+ years in retrieval infrastructure)

2+ years of experience working as a technical lead, leading efforts across teams and organizations

Experience building large-scale, high-performance distributed systems supporting consumer applications, such as search, recommendations, or ads

Expertise in a compiled programming language, such as C++ (preferred), Java, or Rust

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field or equivalent experience

This Principal Engineer L18 IC role on the Monetization Team requires a senior technical leader with a strong background in both core software engineering and machine learning. This role will lead the development and execution of the technical strategy for ad products that cater to both end users and advertisers on the platform. The individual we hire will oversee the core technical outputs of approximately 200 engineers and remain a hands-on contributor, shipping their own deliverables in the process.
