The Meta/SEM Bidding Programs team at Expedia Group is looking for a Machine Learning Engineer III who mentors junior engineers, applies modern data engineering principles to improve existing systems, and leads complex, well-defined projects.


In this role, you will:


Proactively collaborate with peers across the organization to build an understanding of cross-dependencies and shared problem-solving.


Develop and test complex or non-routine software applications and related programs and procedures to ensure they meet design requirements.


Apply knowledge of software design principles, data structures, design patterns, and computer science fundamentals to write clean, maintainable, optimized, and modular code with clear naming conventions.


Contribute to design discussions for big data applications.


Apply data manipulation techniques commonly used by Data Scientists.


Coordinate with stakeholders holding varied perspectives to develop solutions and contribute your own suggestions.


Think holistically to identify opportunities around policies and processes to increase efficiency across organizational boundaries.


Assist with a whole-systems approach to analyzing issues, ensuring all components (structure, people, process, and technology) are identified and accounted for.


Identify areas of inefficiency in code or system operations and offer suggestions for improvement.


Recommend advancements, innovations, and changes in technologies—specifically relating to machine learning engineering, ML platforms, DS models, enterprise information management, business intelligence, and data science.


Experience and Qualifications:


3+ years of experience with end-to-end machine learning engineering pipelines in production environments (including feature engineering, model training, scoring, validation, etc.) and streaming applications in hybrid/cloud infrastructure.


Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical field or equivalent relevant work experience.


Strong command of Spark, including understanding map-reduce, evaluating, optimizing, and debugging Spark applications.


Proficiency with machine learning libraries such as PyTorch and TensorFlow, including common integration patterns for serving inference.


Familiarity with data access, such as defining IAM policies for S3 buckets.


Ability to instrument streaming or parallel inference tasks to accommodate large traffic or data volumes.


Understanding and designing moderately complex systems.

As a Data Engineer on our team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our internal technology landscape. You will build and manage the data infrastructure that powers our workplace productivity and operational efficiency, directly contributing to a more seamless and effective experience for all Expedia Group employees. In this role, you will:


Design, develop, and optimize scalable data architectures and ETL pipelines to support our workplace and productivity initiatives.

Develop efficient data models and implement storage solutions using relational, NoSQL, and cloud-based databases.


Apply best practices in data validation, cleansing, and enrichment to guarantee high data quality and support data governance policies.


Identify opportunities to automate data operations and workflows, using scripting and orchestration tools to improve team productivity.


Prepare clean, structured datasets to enable business intelligence, supporting the deployment of dashboards and self-service analytics.

Maintain thorough documentation for data structures, processes, and code to foster knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Experience and Qualifications


Required:


Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.


2–4 years of dedicated data engineering experience.


Proficiency in SQL and Python, with experience building ETL pipelines using tools like SSIS.


Experience with the Microsoft BI Stack (SSAS, MS SQL Server) and exposure to big data platforms (e.g., Hive).


Familiarity with core AWS data services (e.g., S3, Glue, Redshift, Athena, Lambda).


Knowledge of data modeling principles, API integration (REST), and version control (Git).


Experience working within an Agile development environment.


Proficient analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.


Preferred:


Graduate degree or industry certifications in data engineering or cloud platforms.


Experience with real-time data processing (e.g., Kafka, Spark Streaming).


Familiarity with workplace productivity platforms (e.g., Microsoft 365, ServiceNow).


Knowledge of data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR).

At least 2 end-to-end Oracle FAH implementations.

Ability to prioritize and work independently as well as in a team environment.


Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.


Oracle SAAS and/or implementations on Cloud PAAS/IAAS frameworks is a plus.

What you'll do


Design, build, and maintain production-grade batch and streaming data pipelines that support business-critical use cases in marketing, advertising, and experimentation.


Implement scalable data processing solutions in public or hybrid cloud environments, applying sound software engineering principles and modern data patterns.


Collaborate with product managers, analysts, and data scientists to translate business requirements into technical solutions, ensuring data quality, reliability, and observability.


Write clean, modular, and testable code using languages such as Python, Scala, or Java, with attention to maintainability and performance.


Contribute to team-owned data products that serve downstream consumers across analytics, reporting, and machine learning platforms.


Debug and resolve data quality issues, bottlenecks, and performance constraints in complex systems.


Proactively identify areas for technical and process improvements, contributing to the team’s agile development practices and continuous delivery culture.


Participate in peer reviews, knowledge-sharing, and team retrospectives to support ongoing team growth and collaboration.


Who you are


You have 5+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering with a Bachelor's degree in a technical field (or equivalent experience); or 3+ years with a Master's.


You have built and maintained at least one data pipeline or data product in a production environment, ideally in cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).


You are proficient in at least one programming language relevant to data engineering (e.g., Python, Java, or Scala), and familiar with data processing tools such as Apache Spark, Kafka, or Airflow.


You understand batch vs. streaming processing and are familiar with modern data architectures, distributed systems, and data access patterns.


You’re experienced with Advanced SQL and working with both traditional RDBMS and distributed data storage systems.


You value testing, monitoring, and alerting as core parts of building reliable systems.


You’re comfortable working in an agile, collaborative team environment, and can clearly communicate trade-offs and design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.


You bring business acumen, curiosity, and a drive to solve real-world data challenges that deliver measurable value.
