What’s the role?

Our Foundation Engineering teams are responsible for innovating and scaling our systems and infrastructure to align with Etsy's rapid growth and future plans. More specifically our teams build, maintain, and support many of the platforms and services that power Etsy’s technical stack to connect tens of millions of Etsy sellers and customers. We also partner with Etsy engineers to help them achieve paved path development and deployment experiences.

You will be joining a mission critical team responsible for the architecture, implementation, and support of Etsy’s primary containerized Services Platform built on Cloud Run. This new platform supports the service based architecture initiatives of many Etsy teams including both product and infrastructure engineering.

What does the day-to-day look like?

Etsy is seeking a Staff Engineer with SRE/Service//DevOps experience to join its growing Foundation Platform and SRE organization. 

As a Staff Engineer you will be the technical and career role model on the direct team, in the Platform Initiative, and within the entire infrastructure organization.

You will be responsible for architecting our systems in GCP as well as leading and delivering on multiple critical and complex technical initiatives in GCP.

You will work with stakeholders and internal customers to align their requirements with project roadmaps and technical design. 

At important junctures, you will evaluate pros and cons and provide guidance and recommendations on which design decisions or technical direction to take.

You will help determine project  priorities and quarterly deliverables and help drive the team and initiative roadmaps.

You will produce stellar technical specs and documentation that can be read and understood by team members and other technical leads and engineering leaders.

You will mentor and coach junior engineers on the team and in the engineering organization.

You will participate in hiring efforts.

You have 7+ years of experience in an SRE or DevOps role in a cloud environment coupled with strong software and/or platform engineering experience.

You have experience as a technical lead or architect for large scale, distributed, consumer facing applications.

Bash/Python/Go proficiency essential. PHP/Node proficiency is more of a bonus.

You have in-depth knowledge of Linux operating systems and have experience with hypervisors, Linux containers and orchestration managers.

You have design experience with Service Oriented Architecture and hands on experience with container management tooling (like Cloud Run or Kubernetes)

You are comfortable providing estimates or project ideas that will influence your team’s roadmap.

You are a strong collaborator and communicator and can mentor other engineers.

Experience iterating on multiple projects on a collaborative team, each of which may have taken months or longer to complete.

Hands-on experience with Infrastructure As Code tooling like Terraform and configuration management tooling like Chef/Ansible.

Hands on debugging experience with Linux based operating systems.

Willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.

What’s the role?

Etsy's Data Enablement department builds systems and infrastructure and writes data pipelines for collecting, storing, and analyzing huge sets of data in batch and streaming contexts. As a member of the Core Data team, you'll work on the pipelines that transform Etsy’s rich clickstream data sources into core datasets that are integral to thousands of downstream data processing jobs. You’ll help build out the transform layer to integrate low-latency stream processing into traditional batch jobs; you’ll help design new methods and tooling for ensuring the validity and quality of our data; and you’ll write new robust data pipelines in Spark, BigQuery SQL, and Kafka Streams.

We work in Scala, Python, Java, and SQL, and we work with technologies like Spark, Kafka, Airflow, Looker, Dataproc, and BigQuery. Experience with any of these is helpful but not required; above all, we value curiosity, enthusiasm, responsibility and generosity of spirit. We're looking for a flexible engineer who cares about the data that flows through pipelines and the internal customers who will use that data. We care more about being excited to pivot to the appropriate tool for the job than having deep expertise in single systems.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Core Data. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?

Our team is responsible for the daily delivery of Etsy’s core datasets, powering hundreds of business-critical datasets downstream.

We’re constantly working to improve upon our data services and extract value from existing data sources by providing new and scalable ways to access and transform our clickstream data.

We ensure the health and timely delivery of the ETL pipelines and data models that power our core business analytics datasets and the upstream feature data that feeds all of Etsy's machine learning systems.

We build and maintain internal tools for monitoring and validating high-quality data.

What does the day-to-day look like?

You will work with your team to improve our pipeline that helps us understand how buyers arrived at Etsy and their experience on the site and app.  

You will help build and maintain streaming datasets that power our search, ads, and recommendation systems. 

You will support evolving our bot filtering rules to ensure the quality of our data.

You will partner with product engineering teams to ensure that data collected is of high quality and consistent across all of our platforms. 

You will help maintain and update core datasets that are reusable and cover the needs of our analytics, product, and engineering partners.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

You have familiarity with a few of the following: integrating low-latency and batch processing, working with event-based data systems, stream processing systems like Kafka Streams, Spark, or Dataflow, or writing SQL queries for data exploration and analysis.

You are generous with your time and experience, and can mentor and learn from other engineers.

You can tackle unconstrained problems and know when to seek help.

As a Senior Software Engineer, Windows Desktop App, you'll collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers across Native Apps teams to craft a world-class browser with embedded privacy and data protection features that will revolutionize the way people search, surf, and exist online.

In addition to being responsible for building solutions to get us closer to our first release, you'll help define the roadmap, take ownership of significant application features, and experiment with ways to improve them. The projects you deliver will build the foundation of one of DuckDuckGo's flagship products.

About You

Experience implementing ideas from scratch, owning major application features, and owning their maintenance and improvement over time.

Experience participating in technical architecture decisions that shape the software architecture of a consumer product.

Advanced level of programming expertise, with knowledge of C#. We currently use .NET 8.

A significant level of experience in building customer-facing applications and crafting user interfaces (including at least one desktop application), ideally with WPF, UWP, WinUI, WinForms, or other relevant .NET UI.

Deep understanding of software design patterns such as MVVM, MVP, etc.

Event-driven programming (e.g., using Rx.NET) experience is considered an advantage.

Compensation

$178,500 USD annually and stock options. Compensation is identical within professional levels, regardless of geographic location or team. Compensation for each professional level is transparent across the organization.

Eligibility for company-sponsored health benefits is limited to team members based in the United States. This program does not extend to team members located in other countries, such as Canada or the UK.
