Staff Software Engineer - Fullstack | Databricks | Vancouver, Canada

Staff Software Engineer - Fullstack | Databricks | Vancouver, Canada

Staff Software Engineer - Fullstack

Vancouver, Canada

Databricks is on a mission to simplify and democratize data and AI — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business. Founded by engineers — and customer obsessed — we leap at every opportunity to solve technical challenges, from designing next-gen UI/UX for interfacing with data to scaling our services and infrastructure across millions of virtual machines. And we're only getting started.

As a Fullstack software engineer, you will work with your team and product management to make insights from data simple. We are looking for engineers that are customer obsessed, who can take on the full scope of the product and user experience beyond the technical implementation. You'll set the foundation for how we build robust, scalable and delightful products.

Vancouver will be the newest R&D center for Databricks, expanding our presence in the Pacific Northwest. We are actively hiring world-class engineers to join us on our mission to democratize data + AI.

We envision the Vancouver site becoming a key driver of product innovation at Databricks. To start, we’re bringing a few strategic areas to the Vancouver site and we have several open roles across the teams below, including:

Log Analytics - Our customers increasingly use Databricks to analyze petabyte-scale logs in real time. This creates new challenges across the entire data processing pipeline, including ingestion, indexing, processing, and the user experience itself.

AI/BI - AI/BI is redefining Business Intelligence for the AI age. We launched this product last summer and have already seen tremendous adoption (98.7% of our data warehousing customers are already using AI/BI!). From rich dashboarding and advanced visualizations to powerful talk-to-your-data solutions, the products we are building involve exciting technical challenges across the entire stack.

Unity Catalog Business Semantics - Context is everything for AI. For enterprise data, that context needs to be governed and managed, which is what Unity Catalog Business Semantics offers. We recently launched our first Semantics modelling capability, Unity Catalog Metrics, this past Data + AI Summit but we have a lot more in store. Engineers on this team work at the intersection of large scale distributed systems, data modeling, governance, and AI enablement.

Databricks Apps - Databricks Apps is one of the fastest growing products at Databricks, used by more than 2,500 customers who have created more than 20,000 apps — and it was only GA’ed this past June. The Apps team is one of the few teams that are exposed to low-level platform components (k8s, networking), owns fundamental tech (apps runtime and proxy), and is heavily investing in app builder AI agents.

What we look for:

10+ years of experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Passion for user experience and design and a deep understanding of front-end architecture.

Comfortable working towards a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables.

Motivated by delivering customer value.

Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, or VueJs/Ember).

10+ years of experience with server-side web technologies (eg: Node.js, Java, Python, Scala, C#, C++,Go).

Good knowledge of SQL.

Experience with cloud technologies, e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, or Kubernetes.

Experience developing large-scale distributed systems.

Pay Range Transparency

Databricks is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The pay range for this role is listed below and represents the expected salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings for commissionable roles.  Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, relevant certifications and training, and specific work location. Based on the factors above, Databricks anticpates utilizing the full width of the range. The total compensation package for this position may also include eligibility for annual performance bonus, equity, and the benefits listed above.

We’re building a more open world. Join us.

Introduction to team

Escapia (part of Expedia Group) empowers professional vacation rental managers and helps facilitate dream vacations for thousands of travelers worldwide. We’re looking for creative, T‑shaped engineers who go deep technically while collaborating broadly. You’ll build customer‑facing features and optimized next‑generation workflows grounded in targeted data analysis and direct customer feedback. Expect challenging problem spaces — payment processing, search optimization, guest management, property management workflow optimization, and opportunities to apply domain‑driven design, event streaming, and rock‑solid APIs that drive business efficiency. Escapia software already fuels billions in booking revenue (including Vrbo) and we’re just getting started — advancing a large, mature product into cloud‑native services supporting a $1B+ bookings business.

Join our full‑stack engineering team (React/TypeScript; .NET, Node.js, and Kotlin), organized into distributed agile pods across the US and internationally. You'll collaborate across domains including reservations, availability, owner services, and distribution.

In this role, you will:

Co-define product and technical roadmaps with product leadership, sequencing features by measurable property-manager value and traveler experience impact.

Define React application architecture (routing, data loading, error boundaries) to enable advanced customer experiences.

Design federated GraphQL schemas (ownership boundaries, pagination, versioning) aligned to domain-driven boundaries and evolving workflows.

Architect backend services and microservices (API aggregation, caching, resilience, event-streaming integration) and distributed workflows for reservations, availability, messaging, bulk operations, trust accounting, and idempotency; apply selective event sourcing/CQRS and reactive patterns where they materially improve auditability, scale, or velocity.

Establish domain models for Escapia capabilities and author/service-design documents that clarify service boundaries, data ownership, and shared libraries.

Set and monitor reliability and performance targets (latency, throughput, error budgets, capacity), formalize observability (structured logs, traces, metrics, correlation), and create dashboards/SLOs.

Optimize data storage and queries (SQL Server tuning: indexing, partitioning, read scaling).

Elevate security and multi-tenant isolation (OAuth 2.0, secret rotation, least privilege).

Guide containerization, deployment, and platform convergence (identity, notifications, monitoring) while retiring or consolidating low-value subsystems to reduce cost and complexity.

Promote experimentation and safe rollout practices (feature flags, incremental rollout, canary deployments) to accelerate validated learning.

Mentor engineers on architecture reasoning, performance tuning, and trade-offs, and influence technical direction beyond the immediate team.

Evaluate build vs. partner vs. acquire strategies for accelerating new capabilities and align architectural decisions to reduce time-to-market for future product hypotheses.

Minimum Qualifications:

7+ years backend development; deep C#/.NET expertise

Led multi‑quarter migrations or platform modernizations (prior‑era → modern architectures)

Designed high‑scale distributed/event‑driven systems in production

Advanced database design & tuning (SQL Server, PostgreSQL)

Strong cloud architecture (AWS: ECS, Lambda, RDS/Aurora, SQS/SNS, API Gateway)

Mastery of patterns (DDD, CQRS, event sourcing, layering, hexagonal)

Track record mentoring senior & mid‑level engineers to higher impact

Excellent written communication (concise RFCs, clear diagrams, decision logs)

Additional Qualifications:

.NET 8 perf & diagnostics (EventCounters, Span, analyzers, profiling tools)

gRPC service & streaming design

REST API development (Node / Java / Kotlin), exposure to GraphQL preferred

Strong JavaScript & TypeScript fundamentals (ES2022+, types, generics)

IaC (Terraform, CDK)

Kafka topic design, consumer reliability, backpressure handling

Advanced caching (Redis, write‑behind, stampede prevention)

Security threat modeling & remediation

Cost optimization (rightsizing, on‑demand vs reserved vs spot)

Benchmarking & load testing (BenchmarkDotNet, k6, JMeter)

Breadth across modern stack: React, Node.js, GraphQL, Elastic Search, MongoDB, Kotlin/Dropwizard, Spark, S3, Docker, observability (Splunk, Datadog)

Senior Software Engineer - Media Cloud Engineering

Content Platform Engineering

Los Gatos, CA

Netflix is the leader of internet video streaming both domestic and international, accounting for a third of peak internet traffic in North America and available on over a 100 different devices (including any smashing new smart phone, TV or gaming console).

Behind the scenes is the cloud based media transcoding infrastructure that enables this scale. If you ever had to implement a system that runs a dynamic workflow, in a production environment that is up 24x7, scattered across thousands of machines across a low reliability multi-zone cloud, managing a data catalog that is multi-PB in size, delivering updates for new features and all new device launches around the world while growing to an international scale in terms of capacity, scheduling and cost efficiency, then you know what we’re looking for. Almost every major Netflix feature has an immediate and direct impact on our team. We directly collaborate with all other teams in Netflix, from finance, movie purchasing, through CDN to website design.

We invent our own tools, languages, front ends and back ends. We use and contribute to Open Source software. We are responsible for defining, designing, implementing and running our solutions, and we constantly look for new ideas and new and better ways to do things as well as implementing new features on a very aggressive delivery schedule.

We are looking for engineers that can do everything so our solutions are never limited. Our current technology stack includes Linux, Java, AWS, MySQL, Cassandra, JavaScript, Angular, Python, …

As a senior member of the team, you will be expected to drive the requirements for and own large components of the system throughout their lifecycle: requirements, architecture/design, implementation, testing, and launch. You will need to exhibit strong leadership and communication skills, define and successfully execute on the engineering and release priorities in a very agile application development environment.

This is a great opportunity to make a real impact on millions of consumers, in real time, while inventing the architecture of a scalable cloud, and have fun doing it.

Wish list:
- 5+ years object-oriented experience with at least one of: Java (preferred), C#, C++, or similar
- Experience with large-scale distributed infrastructure systems and client-server architectures
- Experience with *nix platform (Linux preferred)
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience as a Technical Lead on a complex distributed systems project
- Experience with Cloud Computing platforms: Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google cloud or similar
- Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases

Netflix is a very flat organization and we operate in small, loosely coupled, but tightly aligned teams. This role offers a lot of challenges and a great opportunity to impact a global business in a very significant way.
