UNIX Administrator Position Description
This is a full-time UNIX Administrator position located at our Client Site in Fort Worth, TX.
The UNIX Administrator will work in an environment supporting 200+ Physical and Virtual Sun Servers.
The UNIX Administrator Specific Responsibilities will include:
  • Provides escalated technical support to customers by handling systems-related issues; may provide on-call technical support telephonically and/or electronically.
  • Conducts testing to enhance performance.
  • Applies advanced methods, theories and research techniques and assists in the development, implementation and documentation of processes and procedures to ensure compliance with standard business practices. Develops and implements training tools and documentation.
  • Works with Architectural Engineers to provide technical consultation on current and proposed systems.
  • Performs repairs, maintenance and upgrades of existing systems using solutions in accordance with standard operating procedures. Investigates and resolves matters of significance.
  • Provides work guidance to less experienced personnel.
  • Builds technical solutions based on information gathered from submitted requirements documents and customer interviews. 
  • Performs implementation for technical solutions built by Architectural team.
  • Owns the systems and provides response to Gov't questions/concerns with regard to these systems.
  • Provide inputs on technical refresh and life cycle planning for their systems assigned. 
  • Writes SOPs to document O&M procedures.
  • Prepares briefings and prepares updates on project/task status. 
  • Ensures all necessary documentation to operate and maintain the equipment and/or software is provided to the Service Delivery team.


 

Position Requirements UNIX Administrator Education, Experience and Skills Required
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with 2 years experience or Bachelor's degree with 4 years experience.   (Bachelor’s degree in engineering, systems engineering, physics, computer science, management information systems, or related field preferred)
  • Four (4) or more years of experience in systems engineering, software engineering, operating systems programming to include Unix concentration in Oracle Solaris Platform (Having additional flavors such as Linux RHE, AIX, HP-UX a plus.)
  • Experience working with specific software and/or hardware systems with a specific concentration in one or more areas to include: Solaris 1

The UNIX Analyst’s primary duty is implementation of projects for SunGard customers.  The implementation of these projects may include but is not limited to needs assessment with customer, creation of project plan the project team,  project management duties, technical support, and client communication.

This is a technical position that requires frequent use of UNIX scripting skills and related tools.  UNIX analysts are expected to:

Become proficient in planning and executing project-related tasks including release installations/upgrades, new client implementations, mainframe re-hosting and interface build-outs.

Create interfaces to and from Invest One products using standard and propriety tools and languages in order to support new project initiatives.

Collaborate with internal and external team members to build actionable project plans and tasks.

Demonstrate continual effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline workflows, and work cooperatively with internal team members to provide quality customer service.

Collect, analyze and consolidate information from disparate sources (job/file lists, scheduler forecasts, etc) to create inventories and run books.

Create scripts to aid in the automation of rote tasks normally performed manually; review and suggest improvements to the team to gain efficiencies in everyday tasks.

Work closely with other Technical Services and Development staff on various projects and/or implementations.

Create and deliver procedural documentation to Production Control staff at the completion of project assignments.

Troubleshoot application, communication, and system errors to identify and resolve implementation issues.

Work with the Client Service teams or directly with clients to resolve technical or operational issues

Test operational components of application during periodic software and hardware upgrades

Create and maintain shell scripts, procedures and functions

Due to the nature of the business The UNIX  Analyst will at times be asked to work outside of the normal workday. Many conversion-related events take place on weekday evenings and weekends.



Proven operational experience in a UNIX environment, preferably with exposure to financial applications.

Effective application administration on UNIX platforms with familiarity in Solaris.

Strong UNIX scripting and data manipulation skills-  korn/bourne shell scripting, sed, awk, REXX, Perl, C, etc.

Working knowledge of MVS JCL structure and concepts

Experience supporting applications utilizing relational databases, VSAM files or MQSeries.

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

Working knowledge of batch scheduling concepts.

Knowledge of Clerity Unikix applications, Micro Focus COBOL highly desirable

General knowledge of project management  and change management concepts.

Ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks.

The Linux/Unix System Administrator is responsible for performing the day-to-day operations and support of the datacenter Red Hat and Sun Solaris environments. This position will perform tier-2 escalation support and must possess experience in the operations and support of computer systems in a multi-server environment, with a focus on system administration of UNIX operating systems.
Primary responsibility will include hands on technical support work related to the overall health and maintenance of the operating system environments (Red Hat/Solaris) in support of 24/7 operations. Additionally, this individual is responsible for supporting operating system changes required for the transition of new applications into the datacenter.
·         Provide hands on technical support (Tier-2) related to the overall health and maintenance of the Linux/Solaris operating environments in support of 24/7 operations

·         Ability to decompose complex problems to ensure timely and accurate resolution of system anomalies before they impact operations

Qualifications

  • Represents the functional department in project setting or project-related assignments that result in new or upgraded storage allocations.
  • Documents processes, policies, and procedures that maintain the integrity, Maintains compliance with Paychex security standards & policies to assure Work with program office in developing, maintaining, and executing storage project plans.
  • Online Storage
  • Performs advanced SAN platform engineering, which includes storage/Fibre Channel vendor management, storage infrastructure engineering, and host (storage) agent based engineering and deployment for the purpose of providing the business with a highly available fault tolerant SAN infrastructure.
  • Performs third level storage system support for the purpose of recovering from a storage outage within established SLA’s and OLA’s.
  • Performs storage and Fibre Channel network configuration & storage systems allocations for the purpose of providing UNIX and Windows SA’s with new or modified storage for deployment with new or upgraded servers without assistance.
  • Offline Storage
  • Responsible for project planning, design, business analysis, development, test and vendor management of backup environment.
  • Test, research and implement new technologies related to backup services.

Qualifications


BA/BS in Computer Science or related field with four years experience in information technology to include 5 years of SAN or backup experience.  Hands-on experience with the following is required: Windows, Linux or Unix Administration. Candidate must be self-motivated, have the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and have experience working in a team that delivers a high availability service.  24X7on call support. Policy based storage, focuses on infrastructure life cycle managed (ILM) of data.  Experience with change management is strongly preferred. 
Online Storage: EMC/IBM hardware/software and Fibre Channel protocol experience is recommended. The equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.  
Offline Storage: Extensive experience with Veritas NetBackup, System Administration in Windows or Unix, scripting in DOS shell, perl or ksh equivalent
